My Worth Is Not In What I Own.

I had heard this song a while back and connected with the truth it shares.

I believe it is something that we all struggle with. it seems that today we are constantly being challenged that our worth and status is based on what we own, where we live, what income bracket we fall into or what school we attended.   Not that any of these things are inherently wrong, but when we place our hope and trust in these things we end up devaluing or even missing what our true worth is.

God shows us in His word that our true worth is in Him and that no social status or amount of money can impress God, nor make Him take notice of us.

Listen to what Psalm 49 says.

“Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me, those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches? Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, that he should live on forever and never see the pit.”  Psalms 49:5-9 ESV

Our Worth is based on Christ and Christ alone.  John Stott wrote

“Our self is a complex entity of good and evil, glory and shame, of creation and fall. . . . We are created, fallen and redeemed, then re-created in God’s image. . . . Standing before the cross we see simultaneously our worth and unworthiness, since we perceive both the greatness of his love in dying, and the greatness of our sin in causing him to die.

So remember our worth is based on God’s love for us; “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8.
