Songs are food for the soul, what you sing changes you.

Through out the centuries people have learned their faith through what they sang together.
Eat good soul food on Sunday and it will cause you to grow through out the week.

    Here’s how that happens:
Singing Takes Sundays Truths into Monday!
Sing helps us remember weather it is scripture or biblical truth singing it will help move it form our head to our hearts.

We have two voices that are daily fighting for our attention. The voice of wisdom or the voice of folly.

Singing deep songs of the Lord keeps the right voice the loudest in our ears

We need to sing over and over again how we were once under Gods wrath and condemned to die without hope. we need to sing how hope came in Jesus and provided a way of salvation to mankind.

    Philippians 2:7-11 (ESV)
[7] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. [8] And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. [9] Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

If we have not unwrapped what the gift of singing can do (strengthens us, trains us, encourages us, comforts us) then we are just playing with the wrappings. Just like a child who unwraps a gift at Christmas and is content playing with the wrapping paper and not the true gift that was inside.

Singing Sustains us in Every Season of Life

The psalms are a great picture of this.
    – The psalms are songs to God, about God, Sung in community with the people of God.
    – The Psalms give us a vast vision of who God is…. you will see this in your reading this week.

Sing, and sing again songs that help you see God, so that you are moved to love Him more and transformed by His Spirit to become more like His Son.

    – The Psalms show us how to deal with real life…. you will see this in your reading this week.

Are the fountains we point to as we sing deep enough to meet the thirst that the trials of life give us?

Singing reminds us of what God has done in your life.
    – God Is Faithful: we need to sing songs that remind us of this

Singing keeps your mind on eternity.
    – We need to sing songs that remind us that this earth is not our home.

We need to grow in what we sing.
    – What you sing shapes your heart, your mind and your soul. Give yourself good, deep, rich, gospel truth to feed on.

Remember: You are what you sing!!

    A question to ponder….
Is there a hymn or a modern song that acts as a “milestone marker” for your walk with Christ? Why is it still significant and does it speak to your heart today?

In our next session we will look at “Sing!…with Your Family”

(Each lesson is a highlight and summery from the book “SING” by Keith and Kristyn Getty, 2017 B&H Publishing.)
