Many of us know someone who has the qualities of being a “patient person.” Meaning, that in their actions, behavior, and lifestyle, they clearly model patience as a part of understanding life.

Patience is one of those things that, if we are truly honest, most of us struggle mightily with. We all tend to want what we want, and we want it immediately. These characteristics blend over into our work, life, school, actions, behaviors, and so on.

For believers, the Bible is our guide for understanding how to live a patient life. In fact, Proverbs 14:29, Psalm 130:5-6, and Psalm 27:13-14 all give direction. So what are the qualities of a patient person? There are several qualities or characteristics that are important to mention.

Three Qualities

To begin with, a patient person is a person who us understanding. Proverbs 14:29 says, “Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.” When a person has a hasty temper, foolish actions will be the result. Therefore, an understanding of temperament is needed in order to be patient in all circumstances. It of course takes discipline and awareness in order to practice patience successfully in life's circumstances.

Secondly, a patient person is a person of hope. Psalm 130:5-6 says, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.” A patient person finds their hope in the Lord. They realize that all truth, wisdom, and love are found with God; therefore, He is where hope is found.

Lastly, an important quality of a patient person is that they are confident. Confidence in God is knowing that He will sustain, answer, and provide for all needs. David communicates this in Psalm 27:13-14. The verse says, “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

In conclusion, our level of patience is displayed in our actions and attitudes. To check ourselves, we must ask, “How are my actions and behavior in comparison with my patience level?” If we are lacking in this area, God will help us if we seek Him. May we practice patience while leaning on God.
