SING: We are Commanded to Sing!

The Bible does not say “Thou Shalt Sing” but… it does admonish us to sing!...

The Bible does not say “Thou Shalt Sing” but… it does admonish us to sing!

Psalm 96:1-2
[1] Oh sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all the earth!
[2] Sing to the LORD, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day. Psalm 96:1-2(ESV)

Psalm 149:1-2
[1] Praise the LORD!
Sing to the LORD a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the godly!
[2] Let Israel be glad in his Maker;
let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!

The word sing appears in the scriptures over 400 times and at least 50 are commands.

Where Do We Sing?

In the “Assembly

Psalm 149:1
Praise the LORD!
Sing to the LORD a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the godly!

This is something we should value and take seriously, Why? Because God takes it seriously, just as he takes pray, reading of the word, and other spiritual disciplines in our lives seriously.

What do we Sing?

Colossians 3:16
[16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

About God: His Attributes, Scripture.

How do we Sing?

With Thankfulness (Gratitude) and from the Hearts.

Colossians 3:16
[16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

“you are not singing “christianly” if you are singing only with your lips”

Singing comes from our HEART.

Matthew 15:7-9
[7] You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
[8] “‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
[9] in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

“Half Hearted singing may reveal a half hearted heart”

Remember: Singing does not save us but it should lead us to the one that does.

Question To Ponder….
How do you feel about singing songs not only songs you like but songs you need to sing?
In our next session we will look at “Compelled to… Sing!”

(Each lesson is a highlight and summery from the book “SING” by Keith and Kristyn Getty, 2017 B&H Publishing.)
