Sing With Your Family!

[5] You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. [6] And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. [7] You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
Deuteronomy 6:5-7(ESV)

Teach in Song
-Parents in ancient Israel were charged to teach their kids.
-To teach them the truths of the scripture, and to sing the truths of the scripture (psalms).
-Studies have shown that singing to and with your kids help develop your child’s ear, voice, and brain for language.

Just as song helps the child in language, it also helps in the Christian language.

As in the O.T., they understood Passover in Exodus 12

[26] And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ [27] you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the LORD’s Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped. Exodus 12:26-27(ESV)

When we sing with our kids, we may have to explain the truths that we are singing, but what a great teaching opportunity.

Singing The gospel changes hearts, and singing the gospel prepares hearts!

We have noticed many times that when parents and particularly fathers, do not sing, it often leads to the older kids inheriting similar tepid responses that sadly go beyond just singing.

The book gives ten practical ideas to help you get started!

Here is something we can do, or we can pass on to our children, grandchildren or even friends.

A question to ponder….

What is holding your family back today from more singing in the home?

In our next session, we will look at “Sing!…with The Local Church”

(Each lesson is a highlight and summery from the book “SING” by Keith and Kristyn Getty, 2017 B&H Publishing.)
