Workmanship: Service According to God’s Giftings
A church must have a clear process of its members receiving training and continuing ministry. If people can serve according to God’s giftings, the church will be blessed.
The Need
- A church’s health depends upon its members’ willingness for the ministry’s work.
- Many churches struggle with people serving due to common issues:
- Wrong Fit – Some willing people are serving in the wrong places.
- Unclear Expectations – Some people never hit the mark because it is never established.
- Weak Training – Some people never succeed because no one has prepared them.
- Misaligned Vision – Without a coordinated plan, multiple agendas will emerge.
- Incomplete Screening – Do not place people you have not vetted thoroughly.
- Clear Organization – Be precise in communicating the “chain of command.”
- If you don’t equip people for ministry, the church will be limited.
The Word: Ephesians 2:8-10
- Our relationship with God is a gift of His grace.
- We are not saved by good works, but we are saved for good works.
- The fact that our salvation is a gift removes our opportunity to boast.
- Our design by God prepares and positions us for meaningful ministry.
- God has prepared the path for the opportunities given to us.
The Task
- Leadership Levels
- Director – Leading Ministry – provides vision and oversight of a specific ministry
- Mentor – Leading Leaders – provides instruction and encouragement for leaders
- Leader – Leading Others – serving others for the sake of discipleship
- Member – Leading Self – personal responsibility for own growth
- Leadership Onboarding
- Evaluation – Evaluate where the candidate meets the requirements for the opportunity (application, background checks, checklists, discussion).
- Observation – Shadow an existing leader, study intentional resources (read, watch, discuss), and perform ministry role with observation.
- Installation – Ensure new leader has all expectations clearly communicated and all resources easily accessible.
- Formation – Ensure that leaders are consistently encouraged and equipped (weekly mentorship, quarterly resources, and annual vision meetings).
