Social Media- Language

Language is such a powerful tool in our world. It is the primary means by which we communicate with each other. Because of that, words do matter.  When we were little we would hear the words, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.”  That may truly sound good, but words do hurt.  Words are very powerful, whether it is for encouraging and uplifting someone, to slandering and making fun of them. There can be no doubt that the words we use and the way we use them can be positive and negative. On a deeper level, the language we use communicate what is going on in our lives. Meaning, it can communicate anger, depression, jealousy, loneliness, happiness, joyful, excitement and so much more.

The Bible addresses the way we use our words. For example, Ephesians 5:4 says, “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”   Another verse says, ” Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”  Moreover, Proverbs 4:24 reminds us to “Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.” God speaks to how we should use or words. We are encouraged to use our words to build up people and not tear them down.

Our words and language convey our hearts. At times, people will use swear words as a means of showing frustration, anger, or simply just to be popular among peers. God is not glorified when we do these kinds of things. We are to use our words in a way that glorifies Him.

Questions To Consider

Does the language we use glorify God?

Do we use our words to build up others?

Do we use our words to encourage and help others?
