Suitable Helper

While sin seeks to corrupt our families, God has given us a helper through the gift of marriage. In marriage, you are meant to be a suitable helper for your spouse.

Scripture
Genesis 2 and Ephesians 5:26

Alive and Yet Alone

  • Mankind is the only creation that was made in the image of God (Gen. 1:27).
  • Out of all his creations, God reckoned that only one of them was not good – Man.
  • “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make a suitable helper for him” (Gen. 2:18).
  • In the Garden of Eden before the Fall of Mankind, God walked with Adam face to face and yet still said he was alone.
  • While God could have met all of Adam’s needs, he chose not to meet them solely by himself.

Marriage Derailed

  • You are not called to clone your spouse but to compliment your spouse.
  • You are not called to frustrate your spouse but to further your spouse.
  • You are not called to hinder your spouse but to help your spouse.

Helper for Life

1. Relationship with God

  • Before Adam had a relationship with Eve, he had a relationship with God.
  • The relationship with your God takes precedence over the relationship with your spouse.
  • Your marriage will be better if you put your spouse in second position.

2. Role from God

  • God has uniquely wired every person in Creation.
  • All believers have general and specific callings on their lives.
  • God expects your spouse to embrace his or her God-given roles, and he has put you there to ensure that those callings are fulfilled.

3. Rule from God

  • Marriage was designed to provide the greatest accountability partner that this world could provide.
  • Spouses should help one another regarding the knowledge and obedience of God’s commands.
  • A God-given companion should help you follow God’s commandments more than his or her wishes.

Application

  1. How is my spouse’s relationship with God? How can I help it?
  2. For what role does God have my spouse on this earth? How can I help further it?
  3. What rule is a tough one for my spouse to keep? How can I encourage my spouse towards obedience?
