What is God like? Many people have pondered that question. The best place to learn what God is like is from Him. Pastor Travis Agnew says, “It doesn’t matter what you or I think about God. It matters what God thinks about God.” Scripture is God’s Word and it tells us much about Him. To begin with, Scripture tells us that God is the Creator. “God always was. He was not created; he never came into being” (Grudem).  Genesis 1:1 states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” In like fashion, Ryan Snuffer writes, “He created all things in the spirit world as well as the physical world” (Snuffer).

He created all things

God’s creation can know that He exists. Romans 1:19 says, “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.” One would debate, “But what about those who refuse to believe or suggest that God exists?” Theologian Wayne Grudem asserts that “many today do not acknowledge that God exists” because  according to Romans 1:25, “they have exchanged the truth about God for a lie.” Grudem further states that people “actively or willingly reject some truth about God’s character and existence…in essence, they convince themselves that there is no God (Psalm 10:4).” Many in our society come across friends, neighbors, or family members who do not believe in God.

Scripture also reveals that God is knowable. God is spirit (John 4:24) and He has made it possible for humanity to know Him. What an awesome thought…God has provided a way for sinful man to be able to know Him through Christ Jesus. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross allows humanity to come to God through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Imagine for a moment the closeness that Adam and Eve had with God in the garden of Eden. Nothing was between them, that is until they sinned against God. Due to sin, a separation now exists between God and humanity because of sin’s consequences. However, even in the garden when humanity sinned against God, He provided garments for them to wear. Not only did he provide garments, but He provides a way through Christ for humanity to know Him. He cares and He is love (1 John 4:8). The Bible also tells us that He is righteous (Romans 3:26).  Our God is a righteous and Holy God.

In summary, God reveals Himself  in different ways. Pastor Erik Thoennes states, “God has revealed himself primarily in four overlapping ways: 1) actions; 2) names; 3) images; and 4) attributes.
