Scripture

Our society is ever-changing, ever-revising, and constantly updating its digital world. “Every groundbreaking technological gadget is obsolete within a few mere months due to ever changing upgrades.” (Agnew)  At one point, our technology was efficient and sufficient, and did not require any kind of update. Over time, however, most things do need to be revised or updated. For example, “Books require revisions, software require updates, devices require enhancements, homes require renovations, and standards require amendments. We live in a world that assumes everything needs an upgrade.” (Agnew)

Do you believe that religion, faith, church, and even God need an upgrade? There are so many opinions and presuppositions about God, some of which are not based at all on Scripture. That kind of conjecture about God could lead people to think that the all-knowing, all-powerful, all-perfect God could use an “upgrade.” The thinking is, “if God is to endure during our time, he is going to have to get up to speed with our progressive way of thinking and a manner of living…We desire God to be up-to-date with the times.” (Agnew)

“God does not need an upgrade. God is immutable."

The word immutable means “unchanging over time or unable to be changed.” In regard to God, Travis Agnew says, “The immutability of God means that God is incapable of change. In a world specializing in inconsistency, God is unwaveringly consistent.” What a comforting thought to know that God will always love us and care for us. He will be faithful and consistent to that. Agnew comforts us when he writes, “You never have to worry about whether God is in a bad mood or not when you approach him.” Our moods are like a roller coaster, one day up and the other day down, but God is always consistent. “Who he is today is who he will always be. With him, there is no variation or shadow due to change (James 1:17).” (Agnew)

“Only God can be God."

God’s promises do not waver or change. “Every single one of God’s promises to us is based upon ‘the unchangeable character of his purpose’ (Hebrews 6:17).” In fact, God’s plans do not change. “All of our plans are subject to change, and that is why God’s must not. If they changed, that meant that he was unable to accomplish what he initially set out to do…If God’s plan could benefit from a revision or update, the idea was not originally perfect, or the original planner was not perfect.” (Agnew)  God’s plans and His will are always perfect and unwavering. “Despite our ever-changing ways, he remains changeless. You can forever depend upon his consistency. If everything else changes, our God remains reliably immutable.” (Agnew)

God Shows Grace

God’s justice against sin is unfailing. He is holy and deals with sin justly. However, God provides a way for man to be forgiven of sin. Jesus’ death on the cross paid for man’s sins. “The cross of Jesus proves God’s perfect consistency regarding wrath and mercy…The cross of Christ displays both the grace and the wrath of God. Unable to bend on his standard of holiness, God allowed our sins to be paid for by a perfect sacrifice in Jesus.”(Agnew)  In conclusion, Romans 3:23-24 says, “ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”  May we all be thankful that God does not change and that through our Savior Jesus Christ we can have redemption and forgiveness with God.
