Worldview

A worldview is simply how someone views the world. Within that framework, even if it is never thoroughly clarified, a person interprets and reacts to everything in life.

Worldview Definition

  • A set of ideas that impact what we say, think, and do.
  • It comprises various philosophical, eschatological, theological, ethical, and metaphysical beliefs.

Worldview Examples

  • A worldview is the glasses or lens through which you see the world.
  • These “glasses” help people make decisions and come to conclusions based on how they perceive and process the world around them.
  • Postmodern Glasses: Interpreting the world based on the idea that all beliefs are equally valid and subjective based on the person they belong to.
  • Religious Glasses: Interpreting the world based on specific religious beliefs, practices, and sacred texts.

Big Questions

  • Often, you can identify one's worldview by asking the questions humans wrestle through:
    • Origin: Where did we come from?
    • Identity: Who am I?
    • Meaning: Why are we here?
    • Morality: How should I live?
    • Destiny: Where do I go when I die?

The Christian Worldview

    • Origin: Where do we come from?
  • So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female (Genesis 1:27).
      • God created the heavens, the earth, and everything within it.
      • Since we come from God, His design determines our purpose.
    • Identity: Who are we?
  • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17)!
    • God created man in His image. They bear His image when they follow His design with His help.
    • Those trusting in Jesus have a restored relationship with God, and His actions on their behalf have given them a new identity as His children.
  • Meaning: Why are we here?
    • Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizingthem in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:19-20).
    • Our purpose as followers of Christ is to love God, love others, and invite others to follow Christ, too.
    • We are here to make a positive difference in this world distorted by sin.
  • Morality: How should we live?
    • The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I also will love him and will reveal myself to him (John 14:21).
    • Look to Jesus for the most excellent example of how to live for God.
    • By following God’s design for how humans should live, it leads to a flourishing relationship with Him in this chaotic world.
  • Destiny: Where do I go when I die?
    • After this I looked, and there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands (Revelation 7:9).
    • When we die, we will get what we have asked for our whole earthly lives: eternal life with God or eternal life without Him.
    • One day, there will be a gathered group of worshippers of God around His throne from every tribe, nation, and tongue.
