Observations

  • A just society is dependent upon everyday citizens telling the truth.
  • Even if the truth hurts, it is better than the pain that accompanies lies.
  • Jesus classified neighbors by including those who are different ethnically and religiously from you (Luke 10:29-37).
  • The validity of our speech indicates the integrity of our lives.
  • Speaking the truth aligns with God (Num. 23:19; Titus 1:2), but perpetuating dishonesty associates with the devil (John 8:44; Rev. 12:9).

Applications

  • Always offer the truth in society’s courtrooms and leave the results to God (cf. Col. 3:9).
  • Truth should permeate your speech since the world is God’s courtroom (cf. Prov. 10:9).
  • Don’t spin information to manipulate others by making yourself look better (cf. Prov. 19:1).
  • Stop spreading hurtful gossip and unsubstantiated news (cf. Prov. 16:28).
  • Withholding truthful and loving feedback (Eph. 4:15) dishonors God, hinders another, and frustrates you.
  • Avoid giving flattery, and be careful around those who offer it (cf. Rom. 16:18).
  • Beware of those who sound spiritual but deny the Bible (cf. 2 Pet. 3:16; Jer. 14:14).
  • Stop offering the type of lip service to God that your life can’t back up (cf. Isa. 29:13).
